Ms. Dutch Explains Yoga's Place In Her Life

Yoga originated about six thousand years ago in India. Yoga was created as a tool for mankind to be "enlightened" or "spiritually happy". Yoga's intention is to help keep a person "in tune with nature", "in touch with themselves", and to stay "in rythum with the universe". Quietness is a key element, to be able to listen to what your body, mind and spirit are telling you. Practicianers do physical yoga and meditation to begin and end the day with appreciation for the "treasures of our lives" and denotes the polarization of the energy in the body. The physical aspects of yoga are designed to ready the body for meditation.

Styles Of Yoga

"Hatha Yoga" -- "Ha", meaning the sun, "THA", meaning the moon. Yoga's literal meaning is "union". Hatha Yoga is the science of understanding the body in the fullest sense, harmonizing physical, mental, and emotional functions.

"Ashtanga Yoga" -- Heat, building the sequence of complicated and repeatitve poses.

"Kundalini Yoga" -- Focusing on bringing energy to the body, deep rhythmic breathing, opening the chakras, the seven energy ceners of the body.

"Iyengar Yoga" -- Emphasizing alignment and perfection in poses with long "holds", props.

"Bikram Yoga" -- Same series of advanced poses with extreme heat in the environment.

"Restorative Yoga" -- Favors props for supporting poses and relaxation.

Because of the way Yoga intensifies concentration, focusing "energy thoughts" to a particualr thing, some have found Yoga to have "healing powers" for the mind, body and spirit. When someone performs Yoga exercises daily, both physically and mentally, they fuse the body, mind and spirit -- thus believing they are connected with the very essence of life itself. Part of the Yoga philosophy is the idea we are all "a microcosm of the macrocosm", with each of us manifesting a "one-ness" with "the inifinite creative universe". Yoga addresses the "chakras" (or spiritual auras) and it tries to increase the bio-chemical flow (or "energies") within the body, for an overall healthier body, a clear mind and "happier" spirit.

Yoga involves chanting sanskrit words, spiritual connotations such as the mantra "Om" -- which means "all in one, one in all".

Debbie was introduced to Yoga at the age of nine years old by her mother. Debbie received her original formal training in New York, under Mr. Alan Finger's associate Ms. Morgana Morgan at the "Paramahansa Yoganda Self-Relaization".
